Chronic kidney disease is often silent in its early stages. A simple blood test (serum creatinine with eGFR) and a urine test for protein are usually sufficient for initial screening, particularly if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of kidney disease.
A renal biopsy is performed under local anaesthesia and is generally well tolerated. You may feel brief pressure or a dull ache during the procedure. Most patients are observed overnight and discharged the following day.
Haemodialysis filters the blood using a machine, typically performed at the hospital three times a week. Peritoneal dialysis uses the lining of the abdomen as a natural filter and can be performed at home daily after proper training.
